Stumbled upon this place on my last night in Lisbon and was not disappointed. Fresh oysters and delicious octopus - what more can you ask for. The service was great and they gave me a ginjinha shot at the end of my meal. I would've gone back for another visit if I had more time!
Service and food were great! The cod, steak and chicken wings that we ordered tasted amazing. Our server even gave us a free shot of Ginjinha, which was pleasant surprise (and tasted good of course). We came here based on the recommendation from a local, and I’m glad we came! Out of all the restaurants we’ve researched, found on TikTok, and social media.. this one was our favorite! Definitely a gem hidden among the ones that have gone mainstream.
We recommend this place with all our hearts! During our short stay in Lisbon, we ate here twice and every single dish was absolutely amazing both times. Step away from the busy tourist streets and give one of the few truly local restaurants still left in Lisbon a chance. It’s absolutely worth it. The octopus was fantastic, but the arroz con marisco and risoto gambery will completely blow you away. I’d recommend sharing the dishes because the portions are huge, so you can try several different meals. And on top of all that, the service was excellent. Obrigado!
We had an excellent experience at Taberna da Baixa! From the moment we walked in, we felt the authentic Portuguese hospitality. The food was absolutely delicious, made with high-quality ingredients and beautifully balanced flavors that truly reflect Lisbon’s culinary character. Our waitress was incredibly sweet, warm, and attentive. She took the time to explain the menu, gave us great recommendations, and created such a friendly and welcoming atmosphere that made our dinner even more special. Situated in the vibrant heart of Lisbon, Taberna Baixa comes highly recommended by hotel concierges, and for good reason. Upon entering, we were enveloped in a lively atmosphere accentuated by loud Fado music, which set a distinctly Portuguese tone. The restaurant features several dining rooms, and we were fortunate enough to be seated in a charming small 'cave' with arched ceilings. This intimate setting added to the overall experience. Service was prompt, thanks to a friendly waitress who spoke multiple languages, making communication smooth and enjoyable. However, the restaurant's unique delivery system utilizes a dumbwaiter to transport food to our dining room. This method proved to be a double-edged sword; although it added an interesting element to our meal, it ran the risk of our food arriving cold if the server was too busy to check on it regularly. We began our meal with seafood rice and pork cheeks. The seafood rice was flavourful and well-executed, showcasing the fresh flavours of the sea. The pork cheeks, however, were cooked to perfection with melt-in-your-mouth tenderness but unfortunately arrived a bit cold, likely left too long in the dumbwaiter. This discrepancy in temperature somewhat detracted from an otherwise delightful meal. As the night progressed, the lively Fado music continued, with our waitress joining in for a few songs. While this added a fun vibe for some, it became a bit overwhelming and repetitive, compromising the ambiance for others in the dining room. Overall, Taberna Baixa is a lovely restaurant with good food and a truly unique ambiance. While our experience was enjoyable, we might explore other culinary gems in Lisbon on our next visit, considering the abundance of options available.
