Description
The tour begins with a ride on the vintage Elétrico 28 tram, dating from the 1930s, which climbs steep hills and navigates Lisbon’s historic streets. Starting from the city center, you will reach a hilltop vantage point overlooking the São Jorge Castle, a centuries-old Moorish fortification.
From there, the tour descends mostly downhill, offering an opportunity to experience the unique atmosphere of Lisbon’s oldest neighborhoods. The first stop is Manteigaria bakery, where you can watch Pastéis de Nata being made and purchase fresh custard tarts paired with a traditional espresso if you wish.
The walk continues to Miradouro de Santa Luzia and Miradouro das Portas do Sol, two viewpoints offering expansive views over the Tagus River and the Alfama district’s red rooftops and narrow streets.
Next, pause outside Lisbon Cathedral (Sé de Lisboa) to admire its impressive facade, then visit the nearby statue marking the birthplace of St. Anthony. The tour proceeds through the Baixa district, rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake, leading down Rua Augusta to the Arco da Rua Augusta.
The final section covers the Chiado district, known for its literary history. Here you pass by Livraria Bertrand, the world’s oldest operating bookstore, finishing at Largo do Chiado adjacent to Café A Brasileira, a historic meeting place for artists and writers. This central location is close to Praça de Camões for further exploration.
