Description

Visit the small town of Fatima and all religious sites on this half-day tour with transportation included from Lisbon. This city houses the sanctuary where it is said that the Virgin Mary appeared to three little shepherds in 1917. Explore the Sanctuary of Fatima, cathedral, churches and children's houses with your tour guide commentaries in a small group of no more than eight people for an intimate and emotional experience. The name of the city comes from the Arabic name Fátima (Fāţimah, Arabic: فاطمة), one of the daughters of the prophet Muhammad. According to an unconfirmed legend, the toponym derives from a local Moorish princess named Fátima who, after being captured by the Christian army during the Christian Reconquista, was given in marriage to a count of Ourém. Having converted to the Christian religion, she was baptized in 1158, receiving the name Oriana. The count named the mountainous lands Terras de Fátima, in memory of his ancestors, and the county the name Oriana, later changed to Ourém. The history of the city of Fátima is, however, more associated with the phenomenon of the apparitions of the Virgin Mary. Firstly, around 1758, Our Lady appeared to a mute shepherdess in the place where the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Ortiga stands today, and later, in the 20th century, to three other children – known as 'The Three Little Shepherds'. Lúcia dos Santos and her cousins, Francisco and Jacinta Marto, on May 13, 1917, while they were pasturing their sheep in Cova da Iria, they witnessed the first of several apparitions of a beautiful Lady dressed in white. The Chapel of Apparitions currently stands on the site. The Lady, later referred to as the Lady of the Rosary, declared that she was sent by God with a message: a call to prayer, sacrifice and penance. She visited the little shepherds, appearing to them every 13th between the months of May and October 1917. The last apparition of this cycle occurred on October 13th, and around 70,000 pilgrims witnessed and watched the so-called Miracle of the Sun.
