Description

Learn how to make the authentic Portuguese Pastel de Nata in a very artistic and friendly place. Discover the secret to crispy pastry, the perfect creamy filling, and traditional techniques. Bake your own and enjoy it warm. Learn about the history of the Pastel de Nata, born in the late 18th century inside the Jerónimos Monastery in Belém, Lisbon. Hear how monks created the recipe to use leftover egg yolks, mixing them with sugar and milk in a creamy filling over flaky pastry. In 1837, after the closure of Portuguese monasteries, the monks sold the secret recipe to a local businessman, who opened the world-famous Fábrica dos Pastéis de Belém, right next to the monastery. Only the pastries made at that factory can be called Pastéis de Belém. Everywhere else, they’re known as Pastel de Nata. Today, this golden tart is a symbol of Portuguese culture, loved across the globe — from Brazil to Macau — and often featured on lists of the world’s best desserts.
