Description
Explore the spiritual and historical significance of the Fátima Sanctuary on a self-guided tour. Visit the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary, the Chapel of the Apparitions, and the Basilica of the Holy Trinity.
Begin by heading to the Visitor Center where you can find a brief introduction to the history of Fátima, the apparitions of Our Lady, and how it became one of the most important Marian pilgrimage sites in the world.
Walk to the magnificent Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary, which was built to commemorate the apparitions of Our Lady to the three shepherd children (Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta). Inside the basilica, you’ll find the tombs of the three shepherd children, and the beautifully ornate interior, perfect for quiet reflection.
While inside, take some time to admire the frescoes, paintings, and stained-glass windows depicting the life of the Virgin Mary and the saints associated with the apparitions.
During the visit, you may also attend a Mass, if you wish. Participation is optional.
Visit the Chapel of the Apparitions, one of the most iconic sites within the sanctuary. It marks the location where the Virgin Mary appeared to the three children in 1917. Take a moment for personal prayer or reflection, or simply admire the altar with the image of Our Lady.
Head to the Basilica of the Holy Trinity, one of the largest churches in the world, and a recent addition to the sanctuary complex. This modern church has a beautiful and minimalist design that contrasts with the older Basilica. It’s a serene space for reflection and prayer.
After visiting the churches, take time to explore the Museum of the Sanctuary (Museu de Cera), which houses exhibitions related to the apparitions, the lives of the three shepherd children, and the history of the sanctuary. The museum helps deepen the historical and cultural context of the site.
Before concluding your tour, spend a little time walking around the expansive sanctuary grounds. You’ll find tranquil spots for prayer and reflection, as well as gardens and open spaces to relax and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.
