Description
Embark on a mesmerizing 4-hour walking tour through Belém, where every step unravels the grandeur of Portugal’s Age of Discovery. Our journey begins at the awe-inspiring Jerónimos Monastery, a masterpiece of Manueline architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage site. As your guides, we will weave the threads of history and passion into the story of how this monument stands as a testament to Portugal’s golden age. You will walk where monks once prayed for the safe return of explorers, and we will show you the intricate carvings that whisper stories of the sea and far-off lands. With your entry ticket included, we will explore the cloisters and marvel at their serene beauty. Next, we take a short stroll to the legendary Pastéis de Belém, the birthplace of the world-renowned custard tart. But this isn’t just a snack: it is a tradition! As you savor the warm, flaky pastry, we will share the secret tale of its recipe, a closely guarded treasure since the 19th century. Let the flavors transport you back to the heart of Lisbon’s bustling trade era. Refueled, we head toward the Padrão dos Descobrimentos, a towering tribute to Portugal’s fearless navigators. Standing on the banks of the Tagus River, this grand monument comes alive through my storytelling. Imagine the caravels slicing through the waves, the thrill of discovering uncharted territories, and the courage it took to face the unknown. We will guide you through the figures immortalized in stone, from Prince Henry the Navigator to Vasco da Gama, and help you see how their vision changed the world forever. Throughout this walking tour, we will share personal insights and little-known facts that bring history to life, connecting you deeply to Portugal’s rich heritage. This is not just a sightseeing tour, but a journey through time, a celebration of human curiosity, foolishness, and bravery.Includes
Entry ticket and guided tour to the Jerónimos Monastery cloister Guided visit to the Church of Our Lady of Belém and the Tomb of Vasco da Gama Tasting of the original Pastel de Belém at the one and only shop in Belém Guided visit to the Monument of the DiscoveriesImportant Information
- The Afternoon Tour, starting at 14:00, depending on how crowded the Monastery happens to be, and at the tour guide's discretion, may imply the visit to the Monument at the end of the tour, rather than at the beginning (after lunchtime). This is to ensure that the visitor gets to enjoy the place with the minimum possible crowds, to feel the real atmosphere of a UNESCO World Heritage site that took no less than 100 years to accomplish. It is a magical experience visiting the Monastery in the afternoon. Plan the schedule accordingly. The Belem Tower is undergoing renovation works until the end of the year, and it may not look as impressive as usual. It is nonetheless a must see in Lisbon and an iconic building in our city. Bringing umbrellas and sunscreen is highly recommended, as Lisbon tends to get quite warm on most summer days.
